Applying to the John Wesley Honors College

As a John Wesley Scholar...

The JWHC invites applications for the John Wesley Scholars Program from high school students who desire to participate in a creative, interdisciplinary community of passionate learners and have met at least one of the following criteria:

  • Combined SAT score of 1320 or higher (Math/Critical Reading)
  • Combined SAT score of 1980 or higher (Math/Critical Reading/Writing)
  • Composite ACT score of 30 or higher
  • Rank in the top 10 percent of graduating class
  • GPA of 3.70 or higher (on a 4.0 scale)

The JWHC begins reviewing applications for John Wesley Scholars in December and will continue to consider applications on a “rolling” basis. The Honors College Admissions Committee will invite the most promising applicants to participate in an interview (for interview dates and corresponding application deadlines, click here). Students may apply to the John Wesley Scholars Program before being accepted to IWU, but will not receive an offer to join the Honors College until after university acceptance.

As a Mary C. Dodd Honors Student...

The Mary C. Dodd Honors Program provides an opportunity for students who did not enter the John Wesley Honors College as freshman (i.e., as John Wesley Scholars) to participate in the Honors College curriculum. The JWHC invites applications for this program from current IWU students and transfer students who have completed at least 15 hours of coursework at an accredited university with a GPA of 3.6 or higher.

The JWHC enrolls new students in the Dodd Honors Program each fall, beginning with the fall of 2010. The deadline for applications is February 15. Successful applicants will meet with a JWHC academic advisor to determine their course schedules for the Fall Semester.

Application and Interview Process

Applicants to the John Wesley Scholars and Mary C. Dodd Honors Programs complete the same application process, which includes an application (available online or as a printable document) and two letters of recommendation (available as printable documents). One recommendation must be from someone who knows your academic abilities well; applicants to the John Wesley Scholars Program should select a high school teacher, and those to the Dodd Honors Program should choose a collegiate instructor.

Prospective students who do not meet the admission criteria may petition to apply to the John Wesley Scholars or Dodd Honors Programs. Such students should submit a letter (via email to jwhc.admissions@indwes.edu or postal mail to John Wesley Honors College, Indiana Wesleyan University, 4201 S. Washington St., Marion, IN 46953-4974) communicating why their academic preparation, intellectual character, and vocational objectives make them strong candidates for admission into an honors learning community. If a student’s petition is approved by the Honors College Admissions Committee, then he or she will be invited to apply to the John Wesley Scholars or Dodd Honors Program.

It is important to note that, because the JWHC receives far more applications than spots available, prospective students are advised to apply as early in the year as possible.
