Frequently Asked Questions

Some Frequently Asked Questions about the Honors College:

Will the Honors College monopolize my university experience?
Absolutely not. John Wesley Scholars are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the broad array of opportunities that a vibrant university like IWU offers and, therefore, they are generally very involved in campus life beyond the Honors College. Indeed, we are extremely proud of how many John Wesley Scholars distinguish themselves each year in athletics, student government, singing groups, ministry teams, residence life leadership, journalism, and various other student leadership roles.

Is the Honors College compatible with all of IWU’s majors?
Yes, the Honors College curriculum complements any of IWU’s 70 majors. John Wesley Scholars are concurrently enrolled in the Honors College and the College of Arts and Sciences and have advisors from each to assist in integrating their honors and major coursework.

How many students are there in a typical Honors College course?
Honors College classes are capped at either 15 or 18 students (depending on the course) in order to permit greater faculty-student interchange and to foster the creative, enquiry-based, discussion-oriented types of learning that are characteristic of the honors curriculum.

Does the Honors College offer special opportunities for leadership and service?
Yes, especially through the Honors College Student Association, which organizes numerous initiatives and events to serve and edify the campus community and town each year. The leadership for the HCSA, the Honors Senate, includes representatives from each class of John Wesley Scholars.

Where is the Honors College located on the IWU campus?
Because the Honors College exists essentially as a community of learners, one might say that it is located throughout the campus. There is the Honors Center, however, which provides exclusive physical space for the usage of John Wesley Scholars. The Honors Center includes the Honors College office, a seminar room, reading lounge, community room, study rooms, and kitchenette.

What will be the practical benefit of having participated in the Honors College after I graduate from IWU?
Honors coursework is specially designated on transcripts and students who successfully complete all the honors requirements will apply for jobs or to graduate schools armed with a degree from the "John Wesley Honors College at Indiana Wesleyan University." It seems fair to assume that the success that JWHC alumni have had in attaining highly sought-after jobs and in entering top-ranked graduate schools owes in no small part to their Honors College education. Indeed, an Honors College degree helps to enhance the competitiveness of one’s resume. But more importantly, having completed the more rigorous academic path that the Honors College offers, JWHC alumni are better equipped than most college graduates to think critically, to write and communicate effectively, and to pursue objectives creatively. In other words, an Honors College graduate possesses the kind of intellectual competence and virtues that employers and graduate schools covet.
