Students Perspectives

The Honors College is developing critical-thinking and creative servant leaders to help shape tomorrow’s world.
Thanks to their honors learning experiences and mentoring relationships with first-rate faculty members, JWHC graduates have consistently distinguished themselves in their post-IWU careers. They have entered graduate programs at schools such as Oxford, Princeton, Duke, Michigan, University of Chicago, and Eastman School of Music. They have become authors, poets, artists, and journalists. They have embarked on leadership tracks in corporations, schools, churches, hospitals, charities, and government. But most importantly, they have become well-informed, reflective and compassionate agents of Christ in a desperately hurting world.

Alicia Rasley JWHC Graduate
Graduate Student, Duke University
"I was looking for a Christian University that would help me grow close to Christ, allow me to participate in a variety of activities, and challenge me mentally. In the end, I found that IWU was the only place that held out the promise of fulfilling all three criteria. I found very few Christian universities that offered an academic program like the JWHC, which challenges you intellectually and forces you to broaden your horizons."
Lisa Velthouse JWHC Graduate
Author, Saving My First Kiss (Vine Books, 2003)
"I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the JWHC was much more than I ever expected it to be. Honors courses, Forum events, and group discussions were things that I quickly learned to look forward to in my time at IWU. I even enjoyed my Honors Thesis project. Beyond those things, JWHC connected me with students and faculty whom I will stay in touch with for a long time. I highly recommend the program."
Heidi Irkhe JWHC Graduate
Ph.D. Student, Bowling Green State University
"The JWHC was the most life-impacting component of my college career. Not only was I challenged to a higher level of learning through the HC courses, but the Forum events also opened up many new areas of life to me. From poetry readings and concerts to lecture series and small-group chats with guest speakers, my cultural awareness was considerably broadened."
Lisa Toland JWHC Graduate
Ph.D. Student, Oxford University
"The JWHC prepared me, in a major way, for the incredible opportunities that have opened to me since my graduation. JWHC allowed me to develop my academic skills in a challenging, yet affirming, environment of fellow believers. The ability and experiences I gained continue to aid me as I begin my doctoral work."
Brandon Dodgen JWHC Graduate
Duke University Law School
"The thing I liked most about the Honors College was the honors courses. The honors trips were great too, but the classes gave me a chance to get to know my fellow honors students really well. Not only did I grow closer to my peers, I also built lasting relationships with my professors. Because of the small class sizes, honors courses were more in-depth and offered greater learning opportunities; I found that they were extremely engaging and beneficial. In fact, I liked them so much I took more than was required; the benefits and challenges are well worth the effort."
"Love God with all your mind!"
